Be Inspired. Be Stoked!

For Christmas last year, Warrick had mentioned to me that he wanted to read this book called Stoked! by Chris Bertish. I knew vaguely who Chris Bertish was as he had spoken at a previous FEAT evening I attended where he talked about his Thames River Source-to-Sea (run/SUP/cycle) expedition he completed in 2013 but I didn’t know much else about this local South African hero.

Whilst Warrick read this book he kept mentioning to me that I must read it after him and I am definitely stoked that I did.

I am by no means a surfer girl but regardless of this fact I found this book to be super inspirational and very easy to read. In a nutshell, the book is about how a kid from Kenilworth in Cape Town, Chris Bertish, managed to win the Mavericks Big Wave Invitational surfing event by surfing some of the biggest waves ever recorded in the sport. What I loved about Chris’s story is his drive and determination to “beat-the-odds”.

Throughout the book, Chris emphasizes that “Nothing is impossible unless you believe it to be!” which is something that I truly embrace and is closely connected to the reason I started my blog in the first place. Despite all the hurdles that Chris had to face to become one of the world’s most renowned Big Wave surfers such as lack of sponsorship and near-death experiences he followed a simple “Rule of Three – Ready, Steady, Stoked!” to make his dreams a reality. I found these three steps to achieving your dreams to be very relatable and easy to understand as opposed to many motivational books I have read before.

With Warrick and I currently planning our #Joburg2Kili expedition and me preparing to run my first Comrades Ultra Marathon, I believe that this book was the perfect read to get me motivated to take on these two exciting adventures/dreams this year.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to be inspired to follow your dreams and to learn more about an extraordinary South African hero.
